True Blood Lands its Werewolf, Nickelodeon Orders More SpongeBob

sg_truebloodWerewolves and sponges who live in a pineapple under the sea. Welcome to television.

Any show or movie that resolves around vampires will receive, at some point, a werewolf. Season three of HBO’s original series True Blood is no exception.

Joe Manganiello has landed the role of Alcide Herveaux, Sookie’s werewolf-toy in the hit vampire series.

Best known for his roles as a barkeep on One Tree Hill and a love-interest on How I Met Your Mother, Manganiello’s new hairy character is next season’s most important addition to True Blood, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Based on Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse series, The Southern Vampires Mysteries, the upcoming season of True Blood finds Eric (Alex SkarsgĂ„rd) summoning Alcide to help Sookie search for vampire Bill, her main love interest.

True Blood producer Alan Ball told E! Online earlier in the year, “I believe [Alcide] appears first in the third episode. Alcide is already in love with someone, a very bad woman named Debbie Pelt. But will he fall in love with some else? It’s too soon to say.”

No word on who will play Debbie.

Over at Nickelodeon, the kids network has ordered an eighth season of the hit animated series SpongeBob Squarepants, bringing the total number of episodes to 178.

The network will air the 26-episode series in 2010.

“After a decade on our air SpongeBob has emerged as one of the most beloved and popular characters in television history,” said Brown Johnson, president of animation at Nickelodeon. “Audiences of all ages have fallen in love with this show and we’re delighted to be serving up additional original episodes to our viewers for many years.”

This follows the success of the 10-year anniversary special Truth or Square, which received 7.7 million viewers when it aired last month.

The show was created by and will soon be executive-produced by Steve Hillenburg. Hillenburg said in October that he was proud of how the characters developed over seven seasons. “If you compare the first season with later ones they are different, but there’s something nice about both,” he said.

However, he also ruled out any spin offs or further theatrical films. “The show is about SpongeBob, he’s the core element, and it’s about how he relates to the other characters. Patrick by himself might be a bit too much. So I don’t see any spin-offs,” he added.

He’s right. Patrick would be way too much.
